Hesperia dacotae

Status:
Threatened in Schedule 1 of the Species at Risk Act

Male Dakota Skippers are tawny orange with a brownish border on the upper side of the wings and an elongated dark mark on the front wings. The undersides are yellowish orange with paler spots forming a semicircle. Females are similar but have less distinctive buff coloring and faint markings. They occur only in native tall-grass and mixed-grass prairie.

Length: 21 to 29 mm ( 0.82 - 1.14 inches )

Range map

Dakota Skipper range map - distribution locations include two sites east of Estevan, Saskatchewan. Three other sites are in Manitoba. One site southwest of Brandon, one site south of Winnipeg near the International Border and the largest site just east of Lake Manitoba.

  • This butterfly flies less than one third of a mile during its lifetime.
